The preseason polls take a lot of time to formulate but hey who knows Colorado Football 24/7 and 365 better than @303Gonzo ?
So almost every poll will have the defending state champion ranked number one which I have considered a joke. Just like the stock market, past performances do not dictate future progress. Each year there is a significant amount of graduation that affects every team. However, the teams that develop underclassmen will often win more frequently. So as we go in depth each week you might see some sophomores and juniors trump seniors for playing time which is the way competitive sports should be. Especially if you believe the best 11 should be on the field regardless of age or graduation year. All of that being said here are the 3A teams that are Preseason Top 10 playing on Thursday August 23rd – August 25th that will kickoff the 2018 season.
The 4A Pine Creek (Colorado Springs, CO) varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. 3A #1 Palmer Ridge (Monument, CO) on Friday, August 24 @ 7pm.
Palmer Ridge is loaded and has the target on their back and one of very few teams that won state last year and will remain #1 in the pre season polls. By now many have heard about their Elite 11 QB but they have depth on both sides of the ball and will be in it ti win it come December.
#2 Erie (CO) varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. Evergreen (CO) on Friday, August 24 @ 7p.
#3 Mead (Longmont, CO) varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. Lewis-Palmer (Monument, CO) on Friday, August 24 @ 7p.
#4 Pueblo East (Pueblo, CO) varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. #5 Roosevelt (Johnstown, CO) on Friday, August 24 @ 7pm. Game Details: Dutch Clark Stadium
#6 Frederick varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. Kennedy (Denver, CO) on Friday, August 24 @ 7p.
#7 Silver Creek (Longmont, CO) varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. #10 Thomas Jefferson (Denver, CO) on Friday, August 24 @ 7pm. Game Details: Everly Montgomery Field
#8 Palisade varsity football team has a home non-conference game vs. #9 Durango (CO) on Thursday, August 30 @ 7p.
In addition graduation hit hard many teams that had multiple year starters. Many teams will look to replace quarterbacks or hope that some developed well in the off season and 7 on 7. Some teams just hope to find one that can manage the games during the season. In addition to QBs, Defense will be a struggle for many teams as interior defensive linemen will be a premium in 2018 as will be shut down DBs in a game that will post many basketball scores again in non conference play.
The graduating class of 2019 is probably the best group of overall Colorado football preps players the state has seen in some time. As of July 1st 10 players have verbally committed to post secondary schools. Many will hope to decide prior to the season which begins August 23rd only 49 days away. However, there are about two dozen players that are waiting for official in season visitations to make their decision. December 19-21, 2019 will be the time frame early verbal commitments become viable. In 2018 we saw 53 players claim D1 schools as their next destination and 2019 should easily surpass that number, especially with some hidden gems that were NOT football camp, 7 on 7 or combine kids rather multiple sport athletes.
