The season kicks off Thursday with 9 5A contests and here is a look at the coaches and select media association poll, @303Gonzo did not participate but has posted numerous monthly polls since December 2017. So obviously we disagree with the preseason poll that seems very premature given the fact scrimmages concluded this weekend. However, I guess the broadcast schedule might have something to do with that to sway more desirable match ups by ranking teams higher than expected or deserved. Only time will tell as its where you finish December 1, 2018!
#1 Cherry Creek at Doherty
Do not sleep on Doherty! @303Gonzo feels they are a top 10 team, PERIOD! Creek is Creek, enough said.
#2 Columbine vs Denver East
The Rebels are loaded and getting the preseason #2 spot is probably ammunition enough to know they are like Rodney Dangerfield and get no respect. Denver East is in the group of 10 and needs a win to compete in the conference and play spreadsheet football known as RPI. Only one G10 team gets an automatic playoff berth in the field of 24 post season.
#3 Valor Christian at Faith Lutheran NV
This seems to be a stretch in preseason rankings and well popularity is favorable it will be the job on the field in games 1-5, PERIOD! The Eagles were dominated by Faith Lutheran in the first half last season and travel to Nevada. The Crusaders return key contributors and will need to finish to get the DUB while Valor intends to figure out its starting line up as graduation has hurt the program.
#4 Pomona at Oak Ridge FL (Thursday)
The Panthers won the 2017 state title and travel to play an 8A team but are short changed in the rankings. Its ok football fans, the loss of a 3 year starting QB is understandable but did anyone see the RB Theorius Robison that filled in for Max last season? Yeah he was a stud and now they have a transfer in Bettini that will help the backfield tremendously and returning WRs that include #GWL Billy Pospisil.
#5 Fairview at Boulder
Great rivalry match up in arguably the best stadium in high school football. The Knights have a reputation of having talented skill and our concern is the guys upfront, linemen that had them forfeit lower level games last season. Meanwhile Boulder is rebuilding the N.O.W. and were scrappy last season. A great community game.
#6 Grandview vs Chaparral (Thursday)
Grandview is looking for a QB to get them to the promised land and the victory over Valor in the 2017 playoffs shows they have the ability to compete. Jordan Billingsley is a work horse and underrated RB as is TE/DE Hayden Isenhart. The defense looks to be the strongpoint heading into 2018.
#7 Eaglecrest vs #10 Highlands Ranch
Giving up 56 points in the state title game and having a porous defense has been the concern heading into the 2018 season for the Raptors. Gone is a talented 3 year starting QB and 2 way athlete at WR/S so there is much to prove on both sides of the ball for EC. Meanwhile the Falcons are evenly matched upfront on offense as each squad has 3 linemen that have garnered much attention for next level play. This contest could go either way as the skill players will determine the outcome and if you missed it, HR lost its top RB to a transfer to Pomona.
#8 Regis at Barron Collier FL
RJ lost a lot to graduation so it should be interesting to see whats in the tank that seemed to be on empty. The Raiders will be like many of the private schools that have parents rethinking paying for tuition when attendance area schools are FREE. Many of the attendance area schools have improved their coaching staffs in order to compete in the world of perceived recruiting and transfers. Many question why the Raiders were NOT in the Metro East and are in a much more friendlier 5A South conference. Ranked at 8 seems to be premature but they have a talented RB in Martinez.
#9 Ralston Valley vs Mountain Vista
RV is a competitive team each year and has been another JEFFCO team no one wants to put on their schedule. Again there are some talents for the Mustangs and this should showcase them as the Golden Eagles are trying to rebuild in an ultra competitive Douglas County area that includes a private school vying for area talents.
As a bonus our #10
Arapahoe at Adams City
Arapahoe has the former Valor HC that has a fresh start just a few miles North of his old stomping grounds. If a depleted VC is #3 than a rebuilding Warriors with players eager to win should be in the top 10. AHS and the new coaching staff has changed the culture and their defense should be a bright spot. Like many teams the offense will be a work in progress but they are loaded at the skill spots and have repped underclassmen all summer long and finished Top 3 in Utah out of 60 teams. The mantra will be “In Rod we trust” this season as Arapahoe is poised to be a playoff contender.
